The Michigan Teacher Test Certification or MTTC certification is the only test requirement to certify a teacher in Michigan.
Exam Requirements
• Basic skills requirement- All candidates applying for the Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate need to pass the Basic skills test.
• Elementary Level Certification- Candidates wanting to clear this level of certification must pass the Elementary Education Test as well as the Basic Skills Test. Candidates looking to teach specific subjects in grades 6-8 also need to pass their respective subject area test.
• Secondary level Certification”- In addition to passing the respective subject area test, candidates need to clear the Secondary Level Teaching program.
Exam Details
• All candidates need to score at least 220 or higher to pass the test.
• The passing score on any subject area test is valid for five years.
Exam Format
• Except for the language tests which contain two or more performance assignments, the subject area tests are all multiple choice questions.
• The Basic skills test has multiple choice questions in both Mathematics as well as reading, and a written performance assignment in the Writing Section.
