The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) was designed to test educators for basic knowledge and skills in mathematics, reading and writing. The test does not test the ability of he educator to teach these skills. In 1984, the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) adopted the test to test the basic skills of educators in the state. The California CBEST is thus used by educators in Oregon and California. The CBEST exam is administered by the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson. Registration
• Registration for the CBEST exams is done primarily via the internet and telephone
• To register via telephone, call (916) 928-4001 or (800) 262-5080, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays
• To register for the paper or computer based test via internet, please visit the internet registration page
Mail registration can only be used to register for the paper based exam and should only be used by those notified to register via mail
Eligibility
• Candidates seeking initial licenses as teachers, administrators and personnel specialist are required to take and pass the CBEST exams
• Candidates must have earned a minimum of a GED, high school diploma or its equivalent, or
• Candidates must be or have been a student taking college courses towards a career in education
Fees
• The registration fee for the CBEST exams is $41
• Candidates wishing to take the computer based test would have to pay an extra $64
Format
• The CBEST exam is made up of three sections, reading, writing and mathematics
• The CBEST reading section contains 50 questions, set in multiple-choice format. 60 percent of the questions in this section are based on comprehension and research skills. 40 percent of the questions are based on evaluation and critical analysis
• The CBEST mathematics section is made up of 50 questions in multiple-choice format
• The CBEST writing section requires the writing of 2 essay topics

• Each section of the CBEST exam is scored using a scale of 20 to 80. The minimum required score to pass each section is 41
• The minimum total score to pass all three sections together is 123
• To pass all 3 sections of the CBEST exam, candidates must not score below 37 in any section
